Sometime on Saturday my throat began feeling funny. It wasn’t sore or hoarse, and didn’t exactly feel itchy, but it kind of hurt whenever I had to burp or spit out anything. It wasn’t that feeling you get when a small crumb of food is lodged in your throat, but it was something I couldn’t get rid of and it showed no signs of going away as this week went on. It felt weird swallowing anything and some foods downright made my throat hurt. If my throat were a tunnel then the pain felt like it would have been coming from the roof of the tunnel, just inside of the entrance.
I looked up the symptoms of strep throat and I didn’t meet any of them aside from having trouble swallowing. There was no fever or cold symptoms or anything else unusual aside from that. I finally re-discovered my brain last night when I saw a flashlight on the floor, and decided I should shine it in my mouth in front of a mirror and see if that told me anything. When I looked I saw a small ulcer on my uvula, also known as that thing that dangles at the back of your tongue at the entrance of your throat.
I’ve had mouth ulcers periodically for several years, and they’re definitely not fun, but I have never had one on the uvula before, and in fact did not know it was possible. Now I know. It’s been there nearly a week so if it’s anything like the other ulcers I’ve been plagued with before it should start to subside or at least not hurt as much any day now.
